"The others are foolish and mistrustful. They fear that a stranger standing up to the doge will bring misfortune to our little village in time. And they believe Soul Edge is a legend, even though it has only been a handful of years since it last ravaged these lands."
Viola was listening with much interest when the old man was speaking about Soul Edge or the doge.
He blows out a weary breath. "The sun is setting. Do you two intend to travel on during the night? I fear you will find few willing to shelter you here."
Viola muttered almost only to herself:
"Soul Edge's presence is so obvious around here. They try not to look at the moon since it's face scares them but even not looking at it, the moon still exist. And the doge as well."
Viola lifted her head and looked at the old man in the eyes before she asked him:
"Who is he? Who is the doge?"

"Who is he? Our Doge is a tyrant. He rules this kingdom without care for it's people, he only cares about sating his own desires. At his coronation feast, he slaughtered his political rivals wholesale. Any who dared decry his brutality disappeared. Adamo Balsamo, the demon doge... It's said that the dungeons and catacombs beneath his castle are as bloody and dark as the man's own heart."
The old man spat on the ground in distaste.
"He feasts when others starve. Young men are taken to serve in his armies, and young women to feed his depraved appetites. What he desires he takes..."

Listening with interest. Vanessa thinks about that Doge. A tyrant. She hates those people. Thinking that power is good.
"This Doge of yours... Tiranno egli sia. Ma la sua morte si avvicina. La luna sta per brillare. Ma nel sangue cremisi." She says to the old man while she shrugs her arms. Knowing that people like him are nothing but worthless animals.

Viola listened with some disgust at what the man was telling them. She didn’t really want to have that man as a father anymore…
Yet she now had that small feeling of having somehow lived some kind of hate from the people toward her family who may have ruled somewhere… Maybe it was just a feeling… but it was really easy to imagine it and put herself in that situation.
Yet if that man was from her family, she didn’t appreciate it. Mostly if as the old man said, he was using women like he wished with his depraved life so he must have many children anywhere that he doesn’t even care about, maybe even her among them. He would not be the caring father she hoped she would find one day. Maybe he even got rid of her.
Maybe he doesn’t have any ties to her either, she was probably imagining things… She should stop fantasizing and should only stay with the concrete, the fact that this man was evil and not a good acquaintance to know. Viola decided she didn’t want to be his daughter. He seemed too evil. And scary. If she was not his daughter, she didn’t want to be something else to him either. She didn’t want to have anything to do with him. Yet just to make sure, she asked the old man :
"Does the doge have a family?"

"Does the doge have a family?"
Vanessa looks at Viola with questions why she is asking that question. "Viola if you still are trying to find out about your past.. I don't think a tyrant like this Doge person has one." The witch says in a low tone that Viola can hear. Even though they are in Italy. Vanessa can see French origin in the young seer. Vanessa herself was Japanese. But she spoke in a Italian accent. Not common with people from Japan.

Viola lowered her head in shame. She didn't want to look that desperate to find her family... but she was. Even to the point of considering some tyrant for a while... But she should not throw herself in anyone's arms like this... mostly that kind of man... Beside she had Vanessa for a mother... Vanessa was kind and caring... and wise. She stayed with her head down for a while both ashamed and disappointed.

"Hrmph. Probably. A succession of wives and mistresses, plenty of bastards hanging about. I doubt he gives half a florin for any of them, and all his brothers and sisters have suffered mysterious accidents these past years."

Viola made a slightly disgusted expression at the mention of the doge's depraved way of life. She really didn't like that kind of man...
But something else interested her: Mysterious accidents… maybe that was why she woke up wounded in that bedroom in Venice… She was somehow troublesome for him… Then if he really was her family, she really was better of without him…
Beside as Vanessa said, he probably wasn’t… She should probably go back in Venice to find out more but she feared to find those who hurt her again. And since she didn't know them, they would have an advantage over her…
Or maybe she should go in France since she did have some french accent… But for now, as Vanessa wished, maybe they should do something against that evil man…
"So, euh, why did the doge wanted to execute your son? For refusing to go in his army? Does the doge have any competition around? Some other doge who doesn’t like him? Or some trustworthy servant? Who are his allies and enemies?"

"Mysterious accidents? What do you mean sir?" The witch asks the man with concern. But then she is listening to Viola.
So, euh, why did the doge wanted to execute your son? For refusing to go in his army? Does the doge have any competition around? Some other doge who doesn’t like him? Or some trustworthy servant? Who are his allies and enemies?"
Vanessa scoffs. "Tyrants can burn in the eternal flames of hell. The Doge probably has more enemies then we can count."

"Aye. Young men are required to travel to the capital and enlist once they come of age. I had fallen ill that year, and my son stayed at my side... I never thought they would come all the way to our village to find him, especially not years after the fact...."
He trails off, listening to the rapid questions from both Viola and Vanessa. "Competition, allies, enemies and servants? You suddenly are very interested in the politics of our kingdom, aren't you. Tsk. If I stand here answering all of your questions by the time I'll be done I'll have missed my dinner, my breakfast, and frozen to death in the evening chill."

"I am sorry but it's just that I thought that it must be the best way to get rid of him. By using something like politic, maybe the Pope's influence or something..."
Yet Viola knew it was not that poor old man who would organize all this and not her as well since she knew nothing about politics. But she had asked in curiosity. Even if that was stupid.
The only way she thought she may be able to do something was maybe by trying to kill him like some assassin but yet again she knew nothing about this. She probably never killed...
Viola suddenly wondered if she killed. She had so many questions about herself... But she decided to forget about her past. It was only hindering her present life... Whoever was her family, they weren't here, they may not even be searching for her and may even be happy to be rid of her so she won't lose her time trying to find them. If they want her, they'll have to find her.
And now about that doge, she thought that she would do whatever Vanessa would decide. Yet she was curious to know if she could see that doge's future in her orb... But not now, not with that old man before them or those peasants who were avoiding them but also carefully observing them and their every moves... She then continued speaking to the old man.
"... Or you can wait until Soul Calibur comes and kill him. The day will dawn soon. Night is not eternal. Such evil energy is destined to draw the sun to it."

"The pope wouldn't do anything about this kind of situation." Vanessa said in a soft tone. The witch knew that the pope wouldn't consider a thing like this. But she did not know the Pope.

"Yes Viola. We can wait in the dark until the light shines. Then the power of the sun can rid of the evil energy." Vanessa adds to Viola's sentence.

"Hrrrmph. I'm not holding out hope for some shining hero to come riding in to our aid. If someone like that arrived, I'd kindly ask him what took him so damn long." The old man looked up, the sun already setting when they had begun talking, the gloom of twilight now starting to settle over them. "And eternal or not, night is falling now. Do you two intend to move on? Or must I invite you in for the night? I have beds, a bath, and a little food if you wish to wait for morning."

"The pope wouldn't do anything about this kind of situation." Vanessa said in a soft tone.
Viola knew the Pope would not help because of some kindness, his good heart or something but if he could find something to gain from it, like the doge's lands or something... He was like any noble with ambitions but he had as much power as a king. Like Vanessa she didn't know the Pope but to her they were all alike, aristocrats or clergymen. Yet to not insult the old man who may be religious or the peasants who would take her even more for a witch, she said nothing more about him. The old man then answered.
So the man didn’t seem too fervent about the Pope either… Not even about Soul Calibur… Maybe he didn't know the sword. Yet Viola knew the spirit sword would come one day to destroy Soul Edge… But Viola suddenly had a vision : Soul Calibur will come but… She muttered while looking at the distance:
"The sun will shine and its rays will be powerful… The vineyard will wither. No grape will remain to make good wine."
After she had that vision, she shut up, a little destabilized. She looked at both Vanessa and the old man wondering what does he thinks of her. He must think she is crazy... or she is a witch who just cursed them... She tried to change the subject:
"Your offer is very kind... Merci..."

"Grazie. Grazie for giving me and my daughter a place to rest for the night." The witch says to the old man in a calm and peaceful manner. But Vanessa lied about the seer being her daughter since because she helped Viola.
