Setsuka seems at first like an revenge-obsessed person. But in fact, she is a kind person and would mostly help any who request her help. Yet she mostly thinks about her revenge. Still mourning her master, all her life is now based on revenge. When she sometimes gets out of this obsessive mood, she can be quite agreeable and compassionate.
Background/History:
After she paid respect to her master on his grave, her beloved sensei Funamoto Kokonoe, Setsuka remembered when she met her sensei for the first time…
It was during a harsh winter… She was crying alone in a dark alley after she fled from the orphanage she was in and grew up in where the other children all teased her for her looks and even the adults looked down at her with disdain… She couldn’t stand it no more and had fled from the place one snowy night.
But her decision proved to be unwise. After many hours walking in the snow, Setsuka was now freezing, hungry and tired. And she suddenly wondered where she could go… Maybe she should have stayed even if the others scorned her… even if the master of the place hit her more often than the others… even if… No… She could not stay there anymore… But she had no place to go either… She knew no one but those who shunned and mistreated her… Feeling desperate, the little girl began to cry.
Meanwhile, Funamoto Kokonoe was walking down the street. He was coming back from some job where he had protected some merchant from brigands and now he just had his pay and was going home when he heard some faint sounds. His trained acute senses permitted him to hear what a normal person would not and he realized those faint sounds were the cries of a child… In the night? Wondering what could be going on, he walked to where the sounds came from, some darkened alley…
Setsuka had been crying since a while when she heard some steps coming closer. She turned her head in fear, wondering if it was some guards who would tell her she was not supposed to be there, not supposed to be anywhere… But it was a man in a normal kimono, not in a guard’s attire. His hair were long and untidy, he looked like someone used to rough life, the life of a fighter. But she suddenly noticed the gaze he gave her: not the hard and insensible gaze a fighter normally had nor the disdainful or indifferent one she was used to at the orphanage but a kind and compassionate one, even under his hardened traits. The man walked toward her and kneeled before the small girl. He gently asked:
-Why are you crying, little girl?
Setsuka kept looking at him and said nothing while tears continued flowing from her blue eyes… They looked even clearer with the tears. The man continued:
-Are you lost?
Setsuka kept saying nothing but kept crying. Funamoto Kokonoe’s gaze softened even more. He had noticed her Caucasian looks and wondered if she understood him at all, maybe she was not from here, so he spoke the few words he knew in other languages, in any language, but the little girl seemed even more lost then, so he continued in Japanese while taking off his coat and putting it on her to keep her warm.
-You are cold. You need help. Come to my home… I’ll help you…
Setsuka still gazed at him and wondered if she should follow him, he may want to hurt her… or take her back to the orphanage… But then she had nowhere to go… so she followed.
Once inside his home, Funamoto began to prepare some food for her and asked her:
-What is your name, little girl?
Still shy, Setsuka didn’t answer. Funamoto gave her some food.
-There, eat this.
-… Arigato…
-Oh so you know Japanese? Good! Then what is your name?
In fact, Setsuka had many names, most were not really kind to her… She didn’t want to be called like this again… so she still didn’t answer. Beside she didn’t want him to know her name and bring her back to the orphanage. Funamoto waited for a while then having no answer, he told her:
-I can’t keep on calling you little girl… even if you stay only for the night and you leave after, even if you stay for three days if you need to, I would like to have a name for you… Since I found you in the snow, I’ll call you Setsuka for now. Is that okay with you?
It was far better than what the others were calling her, so Setsuka lifted her head toward the man and nodded with a smile. Funamoto smiled back, his stern warrior face seemed not really used to smile often but Setsuka thought it was a nice smile.
Then sometimes after, Setsuka told him she had run away from the orphanage some village away. Funamoto Kokonoe understood and didn’t bring her back. He didn't think he would do this but he decided to keep her with him permanently instead.
Kneeling before his grave, Setsuka still remembered how he took her under his wing, trained her in his own job for many years so that she could protect herself and most importantly had been kind to her and loved her.
Until that horrible day where she found him gravely injured. She tried to help him as much as she could but he was now crippled and would never be able to fight again, then his wounds got infected and he died from fever not long after. On his deathbed, he told Setsuka what he had not told her until then but that Setsuka had already guessed: He had lost a duel to a man named Heishiro Mitsurugi.
Heishiro Mitsurugi… That was the only information missing for Setsuka and now that name would never leave her mind again. This Mitsurugi had taken her master away from her… He had killed the man she held most dear! Even if her master told her to not get revenge, that he had hidden the truth at first because he wanted her to be happy and live a good life, not live in fear or hate, she could not: How could she be happy when her beloved master’s slayer was still alive? She will hunt this Heishiro Mitsurugi down and make him regret his victory over Funamoto Kokonoe!
Setsuka knew Heishiro Mitsurugi was after this evil being called Nightmare for years but she also heard this Azure Knight would have been destroyed three years ago… She didn't know if it was Mitsurugi who destroyed it or not but she now suspected him to be in Japan again. After some search, she heard of a man named Heishiro Mitsurugi that would have a farm somewhere near… He was a great warrior they say… A ronin… Unvanquished… Unbeatable… A legend… It must be him… So Setsuka decided to go to this small farm, hoping to meet her master’s slayer… and kill him.

Quotes:
I swear on my blade, I fear nothing!
Fear me,for I am a demon.
I live only for revenge.
Don't expect any pity.
If it's a fight you want… You shall have it.
You shall feel the wrath of my master's blade!
It's time to finish this!
A man consumed with his sword, cannot defeat me.
Drops of blood fall from my blade like cherry blossoms.
At least end your life fighting with honor.
My life… is not yours for the taking.
Yet another opponent unworthy of my blade.
The battle was decided before I even drew my blade.
End of the line!
It will be over before you know it.
