The palace of the Ming general stood imposingly like the glory of the one living in it. A long pathway, with shrubs and mid-sized trees trimmed into pillar shapes lined along its side, stretched far and long from the gate of the palace to its patio. It was a long walk made harder by the sun directly above the hiker, beating down its heat, trying to push him down into collapse and unconsciousness.
Sweat trickling along his forehead, he still walked on, never taking notice of its cruelty. He was, after all, gathering a companion for a travel he knew now was the answer to years of problem. He could not deny, as much as he could hide, his excitement. During his year-long self-exile, he tested and honed his ability to purify the evil caused by Soul Edge.
It was close to perfection.
Gaining knowledge that the sword was again revived and gaining in power, he ended his exile and went back to the city to return to his travelling companion, Chai Xianghua. He would reveal his plan of the evil sword’s eradication. Together, he would be able to fulfil his worth to his master and to Xianglian—and fulfil his vow to Xianghua.
"Promise me that you will not let your past defeat you. I won't let that happen to you!" This was her statement that made him utter his oath.
The shade of the palace roof shielded him from the sun’s rays, giving a darkened tint along his ruddy face, marked with a long scar along his cheek, his blue robe and trousers and the red metal staff which he was holding on his hand. He started climbing the fifty steps of the stairway in front of the palace entrance.
Panting as he reached the top, he was halted and blocked by several of the guards.
“This is as far as you can walk,” one of them said sternly.
“I am Kilik,” he said as a look of confusion streaked his face. He used to be welcome in this place. “One of the palace guards, Chai Xianghua, is a friend of mine. I’d like to speak to her.”
“Go back. We don’t allow strangers here.”
“You don’t understand. I am good friend of her...” he chose his words carefully. “I need to talk to her on urgent reasons. This is very important.”
“Would you like us to show you out or into the jail?”
Kilik sighed as he tried to contain his rising anger. There was something out of place which he could not grab hold of. Why were they blocking him from speaking to Xianghua? Or was it because his presence was banned in this place?
“Can you atleast tell her for me—”
“No, stranger.”
He bit his lip in frustration. However, knowing that he could not speak any sense to them, he turned back and started to walk away.
With no way to make contact with her, he would have to start out alone, hoping that somehow she would know and catch up with him. Afterall, he was used to having her sanguine presence.
It was dreary without it.
